United Kingdom - Passport & Nationality - British Citizenship by Double Descent (Pre 49 Birth)
Claims to British nationality from a UK-born grandparent are rare, even more so if the applicant is born before 1949. But a solution exists where an applicant:
- was born before 1 January 1949;
- to a parent who was born in a former British Protectorate, Protected State, UK Mandated or Trust Territory; AND
- this parent had a UK-born father (i.e. the relevant grandfather of the applicant).
The parent must have escaped the Automatic Loss of citizenship upon the independence of the relevant British territory and have the Right of Abode. Both occur with the UK-born grandfather, subject to the parent being born in wedlock.
