United Kingdom - Permanent Residency - Right of Abode (Adoption)
An adoption that takes place before 01.01.1983 in a country that is accepted by the UK can lead to a claim to the Right of Abode if:
- the child was a Commonwealth citizen on 01.01.1983 (this citizenship can come from birth, descent or marriage); AND
- an adoptive parent (a father or mother) was born in the UK.
The Right of Abode is often described as the "next best thing to a British passport". It is a form of Permenant Residency in the UK, is stamped in your passport and can never be taken away.
Where the adopted child is over the age of 17 and holds a Commonwealth passport, it is still possible to obtain a UK Ancestry Visa if an adoptive grandparent (i.e. a parent of one of the adoptive parents) was born in the UK.
