This British nationality solution arises because of an anomaly in the Independence Day arrangements of St Christopher, St Kitts & Nevis that took place on 19 September 1983.

A person who was born in the territory before independence and who had a parent or grandparent born in another British Overseas Territory retained their British Dependent Territory citizenship after independence. On 21 February 2002, those British Overseas Territory citizens (the new form of what was previously referred to as British Dependent Territory citizens) became full British citizens.

A further anomaly was that such British citizens were originally British Overseas Territory citizens by birth (i.e. otherwise than by descent), and so became British citizens otherwise than by descent. So their children become British citizens too, irrespective of when and where they are born.
