United Kingdom - Passport & Nationality - British Citizenship by Discretion (Hong Kong - Registration)
In the years before the handover of Hong Kong to China on 1 July 1997, it was possible to register as a British citizen if one could demonstrate a connection to the former British colony. The original legislation allowed up to 50,000 Hong Kong residents to be registered in such a way.
This registration meant that the applicant became a British citizen otherwise than by descent, with the ability to pass their nationality to their children.
