This is a rare instance of a claim to British nationality through marriage. It applies to a woman who meets the following key criteria:

 - Born in Nyasaland before its independence as Malawi;

 - Neither parent was born in Nyasaland; AND

 - Married to a British man before 1983.

Because the Right of Abode passed to the woman through marriage, she escaped the Automatic Loss provisions enacted upon Malawian Independence on 5 July 1964. Because neither parent was born in Nyasaland, she did not become Malawian and as a result retained her CUKC status after independence.
