United Kingdom - Passport & Nationality - British Overseas Citizen (BOC) - Rhodesia
Listen to our BRITISH NATIONALITY WEBINAR where our two British nationality experts - Philip Gamble and Mishal Patel - discuss a family birth in Rhodesia and its implications for claims to British nationality in the modern day.
A candidate could qualify as a British Overseas Citizen (or BOC) in the following set of circumstances:
- They were born after 1 January 1949 but before the independence of their paternal grandfather's country of birth;
- Their father was born in Rhodesia before 12 September 1923; AND
- Their paternal grandfather was born in a former British Colony.
Where the candidate has the Right of Abode (a woman through their marriage to a British husband before 1983 or where they have a grandfather or paternal grandmother born in the UK), then this BOC status can be upgraded to full British Citizenship.
